A/C & Climate

Climate & Comfort / A/C

Minnesota goes from -20 in January to 95 in July - your climate control system works overtime all year. When the A/C blows warm in summer or the heater can't keep up in winter, we've got the equipment and expertise to get it right. We handle everything from simple recharges to full compressor replacements and heater core jobs.

Warning Signs

Signs You Need A/C & Climate

Don't ignore these - they usually mean it's time for a/c & climate.

A/C Blows Warm or Lukewarm Air

If your A/C isn't cold anymore, it could be low refrigerant (usually from a leak), a failing compressor, a clogged expansion valve, or a bad condenser. Just adding refrigerant without finding the leak is a temporary fix at best.

Heater Isn't Producing Enough Heat

In Minnesota, a weak heater is more than an inconvenience - it's a safety issue. Common causes are a clogged heater core, stuck thermostat, low coolant, or a blend door actuator that's quit. We'll figure out which one.

Strange Smells from the Vents

A musty or moldy smell when you turn on the A/C means bacteria and mold have built up on the evaporator core. A sweet smell could indicate a heater core leak - that's coolant you're smelling, and it's not good to breathe.

Unusual Noises When A/C Engages

A clicking, grinding, or squealing noise when the A/C kicks on often points to a failing compressor clutch or a worn drive belt. If the compressor is seizing, it can take out the serpentine belt and leave you stranded.

Foggy Windows That Won't Clear

If your defroster can't clear the windshield, the A/C system might not be engaging (it removes moisture from the air) or the blend doors aren't directing air properly. Either way, impaired visibility is a real hazard.

What We Cover

Our Process

How Every Job Goes

No surprises. No hidden charges. Here's the playbook.

1

Inspect & Diagnose

We check system pressures, test for leaks with UV dye or electronic leak detection, verify compressor operation, and check blend door function. For heating issues, we check coolant level, thermostat operation, and heater core flow.

2

Explain & Quote

We'll tell you exactly what's wrong and what it costs to fix. A/C work can range from a simple recharge to major component replacement - we'll be straight with you about what's actually needed.

3

Repair & Recharge

We fix the root cause, replace failed components, and properly evacuate and recharge the system to factory spec. We use the correct refrigerant and oil for your vehicle - no shortcuts.

4

Verify & Test

After the repair, we verify vent temperatures, system pressures, and proper cycling. We make sure the system is blowing cold (or hot) the way it should before you drive away.

$120/hr

vs $145 local average - you save $25/hr

Lean operation. No showroom overhead. Same quality - you just don't pay for the fancy waiting room.

A/C & Climate FAQs

Common Questions

A straightforward recharge runs about $150-$250 depending on your refrigerant type (R-1234yf is pricier than R-134a). But if the system is low, there's usually a leak - we recommend finding and fixing it first, otherwise you'll be back in a few months.

If someone just topped off the refrigerant without finding the leak, it'll blow cold for a while and then go warm again. Or the system might be overcharged, which actually hurts cooling. We'll check pressures, test for leaks, and get it right.

Heater cores are often buried deep behind the dashboard, which means lots of labor. Expect $800-$1,500+ depending on the vehicle. Our rate is $120/hr, and these jobs can take 6-10 hours. We'll give you an honest quote - sometimes a coolant flush can restore flow without a full replacement.

You can, but we don't recommend it. Those cans often contain stop-leak sealant that can clog the system and damage the compressor. They also don't address the underlying leak. And without proper gauges, it's easy to overcharge the system.

Every 15,000-30,000 miles or once a year - whichever comes first. A dirty cabin filter restricts airflow and can make your A/C or heater work harder. It takes about 5 minutes to replace on most vehicles and makes a noticeable difference.
