Transmission & Drivetrain

Your transmission is what gets power to the wheels - and when it's not happy, you'll know it. Whether you're dealing with hard shifts in your daily driver, a slipping clutch on your weekend car, or a differential whine in your truck, we've got the experience to sort it out. Manual, automatic, CVT - we work on all of them.

Warning Signs

Signs You Need Transmission

Don't ignore these - they usually mean it's time for transmission.

Slipping or Delayed Shifts

If your transmission hesitates before engaging or the RPMs flare between shifts, the clutch packs or bands may be worn. In a manual, a slipping clutch means the disc is glazed or worn thin. Either way, it's only going to get worse.

Grinding or Shaking When Shifting

Grinding into gear on a manual usually means worn synchros. On an automatic, a shudder or harsh engagement can point to torque converter issues or low fluid. Don't ignore it - transmission damage compounds fast.

Fluid Leak Under the Vehicle

Transmission fluid is typically red or dark red and has a distinct sweet smell. If you see it on your driveway, check the pan gasket, cooler lines, or axle seals. Low fluid is the fastest way to kill a transmission.

Whining or Humming from the Drivetrain

A whine that changes with speed often points to worn ring and pinion gears or low differential fluid. A humming noise at highway speed could be a failing wheel bearing or U-joint. We'll pinpoint it on the lift.

Check Engine Light with Transmission Codes

Modern transmissions are electronically controlled. A check engine light with P07xx codes often means solenoid issues, speed sensor failures, or internal mechanical problems. We'll read the data and run the proper tests.

Our Process

How Every Job Goes

No surprises. No hidden charges. Here's the playbook.

1

Inspect & Diagnose

We check fluid condition, scan for transmission codes, road test the vehicle, and inspect for leaks. If needed, we'll drop the pan to look for metal debris - that tells us a lot about what's happening inside.

2

Explain & Quote

Transmission work can range from a simple fluid service to a full rebuild. We'll tell you honestly what level of repair makes sense for your vehicle and budget - sometimes a rebuild is the move, sometimes it's not worth it.

3

Repair & Rebuild

Whether it's a clutch swap, solenoid replacement, or a full transmission rebuild, we do the job right. We use quality friction materials, replace all seals, and address the root cause - not just the symptom.

4

Verify & Test

Every transmission job gets a proper road test - we check shift points, engagement quality, and fluid levels under operating temperature. We make sure it shifts like it should before you pick it up.

$120/hr

vs $145 local average - you save $25/hr

Lean operation. No showroom overhead. Same quality - you just don't pay for the fancy waiting room.

Transmission FAQs

Common Questions

A full rebuild typically runs $2,000-$4,500 depending on the transmission type and what's damaged inside. Our labor rate is $120/hr, and a rebuild usually takes 12-20 hours plus parts. We'll give you a solid estimate once we've inspected it.

Both are valid options. A rebuild lets us address exactly what failed and use high-quality components. A remanufactured unit can sometimes be quicker if time is a factor. We'll lay out the pros and cons for your specific situation.

Most manufacturers recommend every 30,000-60,000 miles, but it depends on your driving conditions. If you tow, drive in stop-and-go traffic, or have a performance vehicle, more frequent changes are smart. Dark or burnt-smelling fluid needs attention now.

Yes. CVTs require specific fluid and have their own set of quirks. We can handle fluid services, belt/chain noise diagnosis, and common repairs. If it needs a full replacement, we'll source the right unit and get it installed.

Sure thing - we're BYOP-friendly. Just keep in mind our labor warranty covers our work, not customer-supplied parts. If you want us to source it, we can usually get quality parts at competitive prices.
