Exhaust & Fuel

Exhaust & Fuel System

Your exhaust system handles emissions, noise, and back-pressure - and your fuel system is responsible for getting the right amount of fuel to the engine at the right time. When either one has issues, you'll notice it in drivability, fuel economy, and sometimes that unmistakable rotten-egg smell. We handle everything from muffler work to fuel pump replacements.

Warning Signs

Signs You Need Exhaust & Fuel

Don't ignore these - they usually mean it's time for exhaust & fuel.

Loud Exhaust or Rattling Underneath

A sudden increase in exhaust noise usually means a hole, crack, or failed gasket in the exhaust system. A rattling sound often points to a loose heat shield or a failing catalytic converter substrate breaking apart inside.

Rotten Egg Smell (Sulfur)

That sulfur smell means your catalytic converter isn't processing exhaust gases properly. Could be a failing cat, or it could be caused by a rich-running engine flooding the converter with unburned fuel. Either way, needs diagnosis.

Decreased Fuel Economy

If your miles-per-gallon have dropped noticeably, dirty fuel injectors, a failing oxygen sensor, a clogged air filter, or fuel system pressure issues could be the culprit. A proper diagnosis saves you more at the pump than you'll spend on the repair.

Engine Hesitation or Stalling

Hesitation on acceleration, stumbling, or random stalling can point to a failing fuel pump losing pressure, clogged fuel injectors, or a dirty throttle body. These issues tend to get worse gradually until you're left stranded.

Visible Exhaust Rust or Damage

Minnesota road salt accelerates exhaust corrosion like nothing else. If you can see rust holes, hanging pipes, or corroded clamps, it's time for repair before the system separates completely - or before exhaust fumes find their way into the cabin.

Our Process

How Every Job Goes

No surprises. No hidden charges. Here's the playbook.

1

Inspect & Diagnose

We visually inspect the exhaust system on the lift, check for leaks with a smoke test if needed, scan for emissions codes, and test fuel system pressure and volume. We identify the actual failed component, not just the symptom.

2

Explain & Quote

We'll show you what's corroded, cracked, or failed and give you options. Sometimes a section repair makes sense; other times a larger replacement is the smarter long-term move. We'll lay out the options honestly.

3

Repair & Replace

Whether it's welding in a new exhaust section, replacing a catalytic converter, or swapping a fuel pump, we do the job with proper parts and procedures. Exhaust connections get anti-seize so the next guy (or us) can service it later.

4

Verify & Test

We check for exhaust leaks, verify fuel pressure, clear codes, and road test to confirm everything is running right. If it's an emissions-related repair, we make sure the monitors are ready to pass.

$120/hr

vs $145 local average - you save $25/hr

Lean operation. No showroom overhead. Same quality - you just don't pay for the fancy waiting room.

Exhaust & Fuel FAQs

Common Questions

Catalytic converters aren't cheap - the parts alone can run $300-$1,500+ depending on your vehicle and whether it needs a direct-fit or universal unit. With our labor rate of $120/hr and typically 1-3 hours of work, total cost usually lands between $500 and $2,000.

We can handle exhaust modifications and repairs, including welding in new sections and fitting aftermarket components. If you're looking for a full custom performance exhaust build from scratch, we can discuss what's involved for your specific vehicle.

Oxygen sensors monitor exhaust gas composition and tell the ECU how to adjust fuel mixture. A failing sensor causes poor fuel economy and increased emissions. Sometimes it's the sensor itself; sometimes it's an exhaust leak upstream causing a false reading. We'll test it properly.

Common signs are hard starting, hesitation under load, the engine dying at highway speed then restarting after sitting, or a whining noise from the fuel tank. We can test fuel pressure and volume to confirm before recommending replacement.

Not really. Exhaust leaks before the catalytic converter release carbon monoxide, which is odorless and dangerous - especially in cold weather when windows are up. An exhaust leak also throws off oxygen sensor readings and can trigger check engine lights. Get it fixed sooner than later.
